In 1903 the first World Series of Baseball was played between the Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates, Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first successful man-powered airplane flight at Kitty Hawk, NC, and Henry Ford formed the Ford Motor Company to manufacture automobiles. A year later in 1904, in response to a need for better public education in Alabama, the first summer school for teachers began, becoming the School of Education. The College of Education at the University of Alabama was established 20 years later.
