In 1861 Alabama, along with 10 other states, seceded from the union to form the Confederate States of America launching the country into the American Civil War. Fighting would last for four long years, claim over 600,000 lives and cost the country 5.2 billion dollars. Union troops would spare only seven buildings on the campus of the University of Alabama. Of those seven buildings, only four remain today - The Presidents Mansion and its outbuildings, The Gorgas House, The Roundhouse, and The Observatory (now Maxwell Hall).
